A volunteer network of drone pilots with thermal cameras. It works across the UK, 24 hours a day, together with ground searchers.

Paid pet detectives
Pet detectives do not usually use drones. They use scent dogs, local investigation and experience with stolen pets. Their services can help when a drone cannot, for example when a cat hides near home or when you think that someone stole your pet.

A pet detective agency, led by a former police detective. It investigates stolen pets and uses trained scent dogs to find lost cats and dogs.

A pet detective agency based in Liverpool that works across the UK and Ireland. It searches for missing cats and lost or stolen dogs.

What happens during a drone search
- You give the details. Tell the pilot where and when you last saw your pet, and what the land is like: fields, woods, gardens or roads.
- The pilot makes a plan. The pilot makes sure that the flight is safe and legal, and agrees the search area with you.
- The pilot flies a pattern. The drone flies in lines above the search area. The pilot watches the thermal image for the heat shape of an animal.
- You go to the animal on the ground. When the pilot sees a possible match, the pilot guides you to it. Approach slowly and calmly. The drone stays high and does not chase the animal.
- You get a report. After the search, the pilot tells you which areas were searched. This helps you to plan the next steps.

Why thermal cameras work
A thermal camera shows heat, not light. A dog, a cat or a sheep is usually warmer than the ground around it, so it shows as a bright shape. The difference is largest at night and early in the morning. For this reason, many searches happen after dark.
The rules for drone flights
In the UK, the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) controls drone flights. The pilot is responsible for each flight. The pilot must have the correct registrations and must obey the rules for the area, for example near airports. Read more on theCAA drones pages.

Can a drone find a lost dog?
Yes, when the dog is in open land, fields, woodland edges or large gardens. A thermal camera shows body heat, so a pilot can see a dog in long grass or in the dark. A drone cannot see a dog inside a building or under thick trees.
Can a drone find a lost cat?
Sometimes. Most lost cats hide near home, under decking or in sheds, where a drone cannot see. A drone helps most when a cat can be in fields or on farmland near your home.
Why do thermal searches happen at night?
At night the ground is cold and an animal is warm, so the animal shows clearly on the thermal camera. In the day, the sun heats the ground and objects, and the difference is smaller. In hot weather, a thermal search is much harder.
Does the drone frighten my pet?
A pilot flies high enough that most animals do not notice the drone. When the pilot finds your pet, the pilot guides you to it on the ground. The drone does not chase the animal.
How much does a drone search cost?
Volunteer groups in the UK search for lost dogs free of charge. Pet detective agencies charge a fee. Always agree the price before a search starts.
